The article "Attention Disorder or Not Pills to Help in School" Alan Schwarz explores some kids cases with A.D.H.D. and some kids without. He also reveals what happens behind closed doors in doctors offices and the kind of pills they give out. According to polls by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost 5.4 million kids are reported to have the disorder.
This article includes quotes from professional doctors and from parents with troubled kids. Schwarz even included quotes from the kids who use some of the drugs described in the article. One quote from a doctor that stood out the most to me was " I dont have a whole lot of choice, we've decided as a society that it's too expensive to change the kid's enviroment. So we have to change the kid." I believe this shows that this doctor is not trying hard enough to find other ways to treat these kids and to not give them these harsh medications that could possibly hurt them in the future.
I think that kids with the syndrome need more resources to help them with this disorder than the harmful drugs given to them by the doctors. Some of the problem is that some schools cant afford to service the kids with this ADHD and so they turn to other resources that could help these kids but they do not notice the bad it can do to kids.
This article makes me think that sometimes doctors just do what they think is right but in reality its not the best choice in the matter. For example sometimes if a kid has allergies and the medicine the doctor tries to give them could cause an allerginic reaction, the doctor is supposed to think of something else and perscribe something different just for the kids safety. I guess some doctors notice the possible side effects of drugs perscribed and just don't pay them any attention. I hope that in the future doctors like this can start thinking about the kids safety more to keep them from getting sicker than they already are.

Disney Banning Junk-Food Ads On Its Stations
The article "Disney to Banish Junk Food Ads from Kids Shows" on StudentNewsDaily.com originally from WashingtonTimes.com, reveals how Disney plans to get rid of all the non-nutritious food advertisements on its networks. The Walt Disney co. stated that it will become the first major media company to ban junk-food ads from its TV channels, radio stations, and its websites.
This article includes quotes from Disney's CEO Bob Iger. One quote that stood out to me from him was "Parents can be confident that foods associated with Disney characters or advertised on Disney platforms meet our new, healthier nutrition guidelines." This quote shows that they are serious about making their advertisements healthier and that they want parents to be confident and reassured about these changes.
I think that this change happening with Disney is a good one. Childhood obesity is a big problem and I believe that is what they are centering around. People are aware but don't see it as a big deal and that is what Disney is trying to promote to people. This is just one of the many solutions there are to getting rid of childhood obesity.
This article makes me think that some people are ignorant enough to ignore the big problems that are in our society. This article made me dig a little deeper into thinking what childhood obesity can really do to kids. I think most of the problem of childhood obesity involves the parents. Sometimes they don't see that obesity can affect their child in both physical and emotional pain. I hope that in the future obesity wont be such a big problem among kids. It starts with this one big step by Disney.

Texting: Taking Numerous Tolls On Us
In the article "Texting May Be Taking a Toll" Katie Hafner makes points and takes notice of the bad things about texting. She expalins to us how texting can effect teenagers such as myself. Teenagers can become can sleep deprived, they get distracted in school, their grades can begin to fall, and their fingers begin to cramp up from all of the texting. One pediatrician recently conducted a survey at two high schools and found that a lot of them were sending hundreds of messages a day routinely.
This article includes quotes from experts such as psychologists, pediatricians, psychotherapist, and teachers. The fact that stood out to me the most was that according to the Nielsen Company American teenagers sent and received an average of 2,272 text messages per month in the last three months of 2008. This shows that teenagers really do text a lot. Even though this was four years ago it still counts as something.
I think that texting does take a toll on us and that we really just never noticed it. Before I read this article, I didn't think texting was such a big thing but this article made me realize that texting really can harm us in many ways. This really is a problem and I think there are many solutions to this problem in particular. Maybe, just maybe for a day at the least to not have any future problems by texting, people could take a break from texting for just a day and then the risks won't effect you so much or at all.
This article reminded me of my sister. She is the one who texts the most in our house and sometimes it is non-stop for the whole day. This article reminds me of her because sometimes she does complain of her fingers hurting and she wakes up pretty tired in the morning. Both relate to each other because they both talk about the problems that are happening as a result of texting. .
